Cinema square

After having skipped it for years (i.e. not practical to watch movies during the week when your alarms sounds at 6 AM) I finally had a chance again to attend Pleinbios (Square Cinema???) in Rotterdam. And because I was interested in most of the program anyway I got myself a ten ride card. As far you actually do ride while watching movies.

This is how it works:

  • There is a square in Rotterdam, Museumpark where a lot of museums are, and connected to the very artistic and bustling "camden of rotterdam", De Witte de Withstraat.
  • You put an awfully large cinema screen on that square
  • You put some bars around it
  • You tell people to come and have them bring their own chair, couch, plaid
    • Or rent a chair for a ridiculously low price
  • One dry and sarcastic announcer from Rotterdam
No guarantees about the weather, only when the screen and equipment itself is in danger movie night will be cancelled.

Blues Brothers

Ha, watched this a looooong time ago, and had forgotten most of except for the name and the absurd police force chasing the blues brothers. But oh such a joy! Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Twiggy, Carry Fisher, neo nazis, the amazing soundtrack!

This was a feast to watch, and by the end I was swinging and dancing in my chair, just like most of the audience. Wonderful atmosphere!

Deadpool

Except for Avengers 2.5 erm Captain America Civil War the only superhero movie that matters in 2016. Hilariously entertaining and makes it legal again to listen to Wham's Careless Whisper and not feeling guilty about it.

Bridge of spies

A recent movie, but totally in the style of an 80's espionage thriller. 80's as in how they made movies about the cold war in the 80's. Based on a true story that happened in the 60's.
Hard to believe there was a wall running in Berlin once. Palpable tension between east and west, but also the almost alien society of the east. Hard to tell whether that was due to the east really being alien as a society or that the movie can tell pretty much about the west but can't fill in much on the east so stuff is being mocked up. Anyway, 80's style espionage thriller about 60's cold war story. Typical Spielberg cinematography. Go see.

Belgica

From our southern neighbors. A movie about a cafe where everything happens that was forbidden by [insert deity]. Also tells us about two brother getting more and more alienated from each other, costing friendships. Made me reconnect with Belgian group Soulwax (aka 2 many DJs)

Fun trivia: Soulwax plays all the gigs held in that cafe, as different bands.
Another fun trivia: Belgica did not exist. But there seemed to be a cafe in Ghent that stood as model for Belgica.

Le Tout Nouveau Testament

God lives in Brussels with his wife and daughter, and he is kind of an douchebag that can only make laws on his computer.
His daughter is getting fed up with it and decides to change things by leaking all the dates where people die to the public and escapes the doorless apartment with the aid of her brother, JC, who hacks the washing machine to become an exit when a certain washing program is being chosen.
Yes that. Closing titles of that fine movie where accompanied by An Pierlé's Sing Song Sally: whoohoohooo-who-ho

Love & Friendship

Jane Austen costume drama. Oh help I should have made notes as there happens just a lot in this movie! The title is meant in an ironic way. Watch this movie if you want to learn to be an schemer without being noticed as such

Elle

A Paul Verhoeven movie (you know, Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls) but a) in French (!) b) quite a raw thriller!

The lead role is a woman unsympathetic as fuck but that has a reason which you'll discover further down the movie.
Havent seen a movie in a long time that managed the "scare moment" properly. Well done!

Aliens

Went with a friend (who also happens to be the son of my neighbor who had passed away)
When I was little I was soooo scared of this movie, with its scary monsters.
These days I'm a bit tougher, like Ripley :P

Given it's from 1986, exceptionally strong female lead roles for an actionmovie!
Not only do Ripley and Newt stand their grounds, also Vasquez's quote is memorable:

  • Private Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
  • Private Vasquez: No. Have you?

Spectre

What can I say about this movie, James Bond is a brand that is protected very well. You simply
cannot have a bad Bond movie. Ok, the ones with Roger Moore where a bit campy. And all the other ones where the Bond actor had just one or two turns in it a bit dodgy (Dalton, Lazenby).

Back to this one. Well made, one of the bond girls an adult bond woman for a change and hooks in nicely on the information hoarding of secret services.

Oi, did you read the movies reviews or where you just scanning for a selfie of me? We need to talk about that but that is for a different time.

Yes, I pretty much went to almost each movie as my pretty self. Kind of hard to have a close shave + make up routine near every day. Ran into Iris one night and got a compliment from the bar staff on my necklace another night. No harassment, except for a strange encounter after seeing Belgica. Sometimes it was just too hot for comfort but was kind of alleviated by nighttime and wearing a dress. Sometimes it was just pouring down on me and I hid underneath my poncho and umbrella
